The process of maminang (proposal) is a significant stage in the marriage customs of the Minangkabau people, an ethnic group native to the highlands of West Sumatra, Indonesia. Here is an overview of the maminang process in Minangkabau:

Bajapuik Tradition: In Minangkabau culture, there is a unique tradition called “bajapuik” or “japuik” (fetching). Unlike in many other cultures, it is the bride’s family who initiates the proposal to the groom’s family.

Preparation: Before the proposal, the bride’s family holds a meeting to prepare everything needed for the process. This includes selecting representatives (usually an uncle or elder known as mamak or ninik mamak) who will formally propose to the groom’s family.

Arranging a Meeting: The bride’s family arranges a meeting with the groom’s family. During this meeting, the representatives from the bride’s side will formally express their intentions. This is done with utmost respect and adherence to traditional customs.

Response from the Groom’s Family: After hearing the proposal, the groom’s family will have an internal discussion before giving their response. If the proposal is accepted, they will discuss the details regarding the dowry (mahar), the wedding date, and other relevant matters.

Exchange of Tokens: Once an agreement is reached, both families exchange tokens or symbols as a sign that the proposal has been accepted and the wedding preparations will proceed. These tokens could be rings or other valuable items.
