The process of maminang (proposal) is a significant stage in the marriage customs of the Minangkabau people, an ethnic group native to the highlands of West Sumatra, Indonesia. Here is an overview of the maminang process in Minangkabau:

Bajapuik Tradition: In Minangkabau culture, there is a unique tradition called “bajapuik” or “japuik” (fetching). Unlike in many other cultures, it is the bride’s family who initiates the proposal to the groom’s family.

Preparation: Before the proposal, the bride’s family holds a meeting to prepare everything needed for the process. This includes selecting representatives (usually an uncle or elder known as mamak or ninik mamak) who will formally propose to the groom’s family.
